NHS Member Meetings

Mandatory Member Meetings: First Tuesday of every month before school in the lecture hall.  All members are expected to attend all meetings, unless excused by Mrs. Balderrama or Mrs. Zahara in advance. 2018-19 meeting dates:

NHS Member Requirements

Each member is required to complete 20 hours through NHS-sponsored activities, including an individual service project, and 10 additional hours of service per school year.

Membership Criteria for the 2019-2020 School Year

To be eligible to apply for National Honor Society:

  1. The student must be an upcoming junior or senior.

  2. The student must have a 95 GPA.

In February, eligible students will be invited to attend a mandatory meeting to pick up the student application packet and receive further instruction on filling out the packet.  Students will be given a due date to turn in the packet. 

 

Next, students will be evaluated by the Faculty Council on the basis of leadership, service, character, and scholarship.  This evaluation includes the student application packet, teacher reports, attendance/tardies, and discipline record.  The student application packet must be filled out completely, including the verification signatures and essays. 

Overview of Selection Process for the 2019-2020 School Year

  1. To be considered for membership, a student must be an upcoming junior or senior

  2. The student must have a 95 GPA.

  3. ​Eligible students are notified to attend a MANDATORY meeting in February where student application packets are distributed and assistance in filling out the packet is provided. 

  4. Any eligible student who wishes to be considered for membership must complete the student application packet with appropriate signatures and essays (see packet for details).

  5. Completed packets must be returned by March 15, 2019 for a student to be considered for membership.  This is an absolute deadline.  No packets will be accepted after this time.

  6. Once the completed packets are received, the student's name is placed on a list of applicants.

  7. Mrs. Balderrama and Mrs. Zahara will obtain teacher reports on leadership and character for all eligible students.  The faculty council will review these reports.

  8. Mrs. Balderrama and Mrs. Zahara will check discipline records, attendance, and tardies.  The faculty council will review this information.  

  9. Mrs. Balderrama and Mrs. Zahara present the completed information packets to the NHS Faculty Council, who has final authority in selecting members of NHS. Note: The Faculty Council is composed of five experienced teachers.  Neither the advisers nor the principal are members of the council.  They have no vote in the selection process. 

  10. All applicants, regardless of whether they are offered membership in NHS, will receive notification of their induction status on or about April 8, 2019.

  11. Students who are offered membership by the council and who accept membership in NHS will participate in the induction ceremony in the Performing Arts Center on April 17, 2019.
